Associate of Arts Degree in Social Work

Students who intend to complete an Associate of Arts degree in Social Work at Indian Hills and transfer to a four-year institution and major in social work should consult with an Indian Hills Academic Advisor and the four-year institution to determine specific requirements for the major they intend to pursue.  Students who complete the Social Work Transfer Major will receive an Associate of Arts degree in Social Work.

The Social Work Transfer Major provides an excellent foundation for students interested in transferring to a four-year college to earn a baccalaureate degree with a major in social work. This program equally applies to those students who want to take selected social sciences courses to fulfill general education requirements. The curriculum focuses on social problems by addressing them from various perspectives, including social psychology, diversity and criminology.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain and discover the ability to use sociological imagination and the major classical or contemporary perspectives in social theory to analyze social problems in context, and to generate and evaluate solutions.
  2. Develop critical thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating social, political, and/or cultural arguments across a variety of sociological areas such as inequality, social problems, human sexuality and gender, race, social economics, and social justice.

  3. Examine research methodologies used in social sciences to evaluate the quality and characteristics in sociological research and to evaluate representations of data in public discourse.

  4. Develop an awareness of diversity by analyzing how individuals’ worldviews of different cultural, religious, and political belief systems interpret the world around them through these beliefs.

  5. Develop and construct effective and convincing written and verbal arguments using sociological concepts.

  6. Evaluate how human behavior is shaped through social phenomena, social structures, social processes, social institutions, cultural routines, and socio-political change as it occurs locally and globally.

Graduates of the Social Work Transfer Major have the following options:

  1.  Transfer to a four-year school and complete a major in social work. Career opportunities could then include direct services and program development and implementation, among others.
  2. After completion of a baccalaureate degree, pursue a master’s degree in social work, which would open up opportunities for teaching and counseling.
