Associate of Arts Degree in Fine Arts

Students who intend to complete an Associate of Arts Degree in Fine Arts and transfer to a four-year institution should consult with an Indian Hills Academic Advisor and the four-year institution to determine any additional requirements at the four-year institution. 

The Fine Arts Transfer Major provides a foundation for students interested in the life sciences. Graduates of the Fine Arts Transfer Major will receive an Associate of Arts Degree in Fine Arts. 

Offered at Ottumwa Campus

This area of concentration provides an excellent foundation for students interested in transferring to a four-year college to earn a baccalaureate degree with a major in one of the several areas of fine arts education. The program may also apply to those students who want to take selected courses to fulfill general education requirements. The curriculum focuses on studies in art, design, and the history of art.  The courses combine creative experiences with technical training in the skills and aesthetic principles of various art forms. Throughout the program, students will be provided information on transfer options and on the preparation and presentation of a portfolio of work for a four-year program.

Program Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate competency in the use of the tools, equipment, and instruments necessary for creating artwork.
2. Give form to ideas and/or concepts through self-expression.
3. Demonstrate insight and perception in analyzing various forms of art, both historical and contemporary.
4. Engage in creating a variety of art styles, which include a basic level of technical proficiency.
5. Demonstrate the ability to think divergently when considering multiple solutions to any visual problem.
6. Develop a wide range of techniques through the use of varied media and methods.
7. Explore different art traditions in their historical and stylistic contexts.
8. Explore the role and value of art in human culture including the art of diverse cultures.
9. Become reflective and critical practitioners of fine arts.
   1. Approach the art process with creative thought followed by critical reflection.
   2. Reflect on personal development in art through continual self-evaluation.
10. Develop academic skills appropriate for the study and understanding of fine arts.

11. Understand the dynamic, holistic and evolving nature of art and the interdependencies of all aspects of art.
