Medical Laboratory Assistant, Diploma

The Medical Laboratory Assistant program is a nine-month (three-term) diploma program designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in clinical laboratory settings such as hospitals, clinics and outpatient laboratory facilities. Medical laboratory assistants perform phlebotomy, specimen processing, quality control and laboratory orientation and regulation under the supervision of physicians, laboratory scientists or technologists. The program includes instruction in computer skills, laboratory billing practices and the performance of assistant-level testing according to the standard operating procedures.

To enroll, complete an IHCC application and submit high school transcripts or High School Equivalency Diploma scores and take one of the following:  ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER test. Testing may be scheduled by calling the IHCC Testing Center at (641) 683-5142 or (800) 726-2585, ext. 5142. Admission to this program is based on GPA and test scores. This program may be entered only at the beginning of the Fall term.

Criminal background, drug screening, and dependent adult and child abuse record checks are required prior to the clinical lab practicum.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded a diploma for Medical Laboratory Assistant and are eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification exam.
